Did the NRA win the gun control debate?

Caught Bowling for Columbine on Bravo last night. Michael Moore is really fat. For all the flaws in his movies, he always manages to make some very powerful and compelling points. If nothing else, we should all agree that semi-automatic assault rifles don't belong in gun shops, gun shows, or walmarts. I've never been able to get my head around the reasons why the NRA so passionatley defends our right to own and use these things. We simply don't need 'em for anything. All's they're good for is killing people fast and efficiently.

But, for some reason, it seems we've stopped caring. Even with all these new fears about terrorism and illegal immigration, no one talks about gun control anymore. It's just as easy now to get a gun as it was before Columbine and September 11th. The NRA is powerful, and they seem to have won. Has our culture changed? Are we not as violent as we used to be? I pray that's the case, but I fear it's not.
