Bob Dylan.
Martin Scorcese's PBS special didn't expose any new revelations about this genius, but it sure was enjoyable to watch. Dylan's commentary, whilst sometimes mildly entertaining, was characteristically vague and evasive. But, he doesn't really owe us any explanations; does he? My only real gripe with the whole piece was that it ended at the motorcycle crash. The man's been on a non-stop tour for nearly 20 years now, has released two masterpieces within the last decade, and nearly died a few years ago....none of that even gets a post script? Sure, his work in the 60s was perhaps his most influential, but so much of it since then deserves so much more credit and attention than it gets. I expected at least a nod from Martin.
At least one universal truth was revealed, though: there have always been and will always be pretentious music fans fearful of anything not inherently and obviously earnest and elitist. Back then, they were folkies; nowadays they're inide/emo snobs. Equally clueless and annoying.
