So, I was watching the country music awards

last night. Actually enjoyed a lot of the music. That Kenney Chesney song about summer time and drinking wine? Great stuff. I'm a sucker for that crap. Those people that sing that "Boondocks" song? Not bad. I even think Gretchen Wilson has a good voice, and yeah, her hard drinkin' redneck attitude is kind of endearing. But, my god, the politics have got to go. I know it's rather fashionable to cry about liberal Hollywood, soap box Oscar acceptance speeches, and anti-war celebrity activists. Fine. Sean Penn and Barbara Stresaind are kind of annoying. But, the same shit goes on at so-called red state events. No matter what side of the political spectrum an idiot's on, ignorant, misguided and misplaced political aggrandizing is always annoying. Take Gretchen Wilson's "Politically Uncorrect" (clever title, I know. She changed the in to un). She sings about how she's for the working man, the soldier, and the Bible. How is any of that politically UNcorrect? Those are, like, the three most popular things to be for.

The audience ate it up. They were loving it. And, actually, it's not a bad song. Like I said, I kinda like Gretchen. And, so does the country music community. To them, she seems to represent some sort of persecuted species--the patriotic redneck. Not sure how they're persecuted, but for some reason they feel they are.

Maybe it's beacause they're insulted by movies like The DaVinci code and Farenheit 911. I guess I never realized just how tough a time patriotic Christians had in this country. And, I am a patriotic Christian. I had no idea I was being treated so unfairly.

But, I digress.

The worst part of all this is that when someone's actually brave enough to really be politically UNcorrect, they're completely shunned by the country music establishment. Yup, I'm talking about the Dixie Chicks. Even though I really did enjoy a lot of the music last night, the Dixie Chicks are clearly a better band than anyone that took the stage. Their songs are better, and their playing far more original. But, they're pariahs simply because they hold different political views than the rest of the rednecks. They're persecuted for their beliefs. That's unAmerican. I'm patriotic and I love my country--not just for Republican presidents and war, but for the far more noble ideal that she represents: freedom. I'm not exactly sure what everyone else was celebrating last night.
