See,
Democrats can be religious too.
Though, it's kind of sad they felt the need to engage in a pissing contest with the religious right.
Instead of trying to prove who's the most religious, how's about we start exhibiting competence and common sense in government? We send our leaders to Washington to implement effective public policy, not spread the Gospel.

Ephesians 2:8-9 (New International Version)
8For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9not by works, so that no one can boast.
I feel that quite a few Catholics do not understand these verses?
I don't think so; most Catholics fully understand it is through the grace of God that we have been saved. But, that does not free us from serving the Lord by putting into practice the teachings of Christ. His words and his example compel us to serve the poor and needy, and to strive for peace. As a socially responsible Christian, good works are indeed important; too many Protestants I feel forget that.
The thing you have to be careful about is the reason you are doing good works. Is it because you want to or that you feel lead by the spirit to do so. I feel deeds for deeds sake will not be rewarded.
I'm not sure I follow. I can't speak for all Catholics, but the call to social justice I feel is not out of a selfish desire to get myself into heaven. It's out of a love and compassion for my fellow human beings--a love and compassion I learned through Christ.
It seems like you're implying that only good deeds done in the name of the Lord are worth doing. That I cannot agree with. What about the works of our Jewish, Buddist and Athiest friends? The good work they do is surely just as valuable and valid.
